Wolverhampton based design and print specialists, Hughes Print, recently became Vivid Laminating Technology Ltd.’s first customer for their new 20 metre-per-minute Matrix MX-530S along with an Omni-Flow Deep Pile Auto Feeder. Hughes already had a Matrix MX-530P and were impressed by the quality and consistency of its output and so when it came to increasing their in-house capacity they looked to Vivid for a solution.
Their existing MX-530P was hand-fed and Hughes had decided that, for them, the maximum viable number of sheets on an in-house run was around 500 SRA3 sheets; above that and they typically outsourced with the loss of control, delays and additional cost that entailed. The faster speed and heavier construction of the MX-530S combined with the Omni-Flow Deep Pile Feeder has meant that a 2,000 SRA3 sheet run or greater is now viable in-house.
Proprietor Daniel Hughes said, “Vivid have supported us with competitive consumable costs on the new machine, this combined with the extra production speed and semi-attended operation means that we are now a lot more competitive on products produced on this system.” He continued “The 530S builds on the foundations of the 530P system, it is able to handle all of the existing laminate and foil work we produced on the 530P and with the Omni-Flow at a much faster rate; the laminate and foiling finish on both machines is excellent. We are hopeful that this side of the business, with the increased productivity, will allow us to handle larger jobs on this equipment.”
The laminators support Hughes digital print station on short-run lamination and foiling work and their full-colour litho press, primarily on booklet covers. The addition of the Flat Book option on the Matrix additionally gives Hughes an edge on PUR perfect binding jobs
Hughes added “We had a 530P already and were happy with how that machine performed, plus we have other Vivid equipment including an EasyMount Air 1600 and we had a demonstration the new equipment’s capability at exhibitions such as the Print Show in Telford. We are very satisfied with the service and support Vivid offer.”
“I was really happy that we got a very reasonable exchange on our old kit, which gave us additional confidence in investing in a new system when considering the devaluation rate of equipment.”
The new 20m/minute system was installed by Vivid staff who also supplied comprehensive training to the Hughes team on-site.
The Matrix is a modular system that can grow with a printer’s business. It offers lamination, foiling and Spot UV effects capability supporting Vivid’s wide range of Aqua Aura Foils and Boss films including news inclusions such as printable matt and gloss. Features such as pneumatic rollers and stabilised temperature control ensure consistent results across long runs and repeatability on re-runs reducing waste and saving time and money. Details of the range can be found at:
Vivid Laminating Technologies Ltd has added to the extensive range of Boss laminating films and Aqua Aura foils. All have been tested to work on the Matrix Foil and Lamination System with further additions regularly being added.
New film additions include a printable matt and gloss which are already proving hugely popular. Additionally, there are new films offering 40% extra bonding strength and faster curing time supporting virtually instant crease/cut processing. Last but not least there are new bio-degradable films for environmentally sensitive applications.
New patterned spot UV effects have been introduced to the foil range including a stunning ‘cracked ice’ effect.
The Matrix System supports a wide range of films and foils due to its pneumatic rollers and variable temperature range. The temperature is electronically stabilised meaning that jobs run consistently from start to finish, reducing wastage, and that they are repeatable. The Matrix is a modular system allowing a print shop to add to the system as its business grows – for example by adding the OmniFlow deep pile feeder at a later date.
Vivid are exclusive lamination partners for Color-Logic Special Effects for Print software which enables users to create 250 metallic shades from a single Aqua Aura silver foil.
Matrix users are not restricted to foiling only on soft touch because Vivid’s laminates are fully compatible with foils and spot UV effects.
Cheshire based print, design and mailing specialist, DDL Group, recently invested in new print finishing equipment from Vivid Laminating Technologies. The purchase included a Matrix MX-370P Lamination, Foiling and Spot UV Effects system along with the dedicated Omni-Flow Deep Pile Feeder. The system was installed, and staff trained by Vivid.
Prior to the purchase, DDL were regularly outsourcing lamination which tied-up resources in terms of transporting printed materials to and from the supplier, typically taking a day or two to turn around. Any delays at the supplier caused a knock-on effect on their own lead time that was beyond their control and which could negatively impact on their customer's experience of DDL. A decision was made to bring lamination services in-house to remove the reliance on a third-party and the search for a suitable system began.
“When we saw the Matrix we were impressed by how easy it was to use and how quickly it got up to temperature and stayed there. The deep pile auto feeder was great, we could see how this could really speed-up production time and, again, it was very simple to operate via the built-in touch-screen control” Said Greg Girard, Director and Technical Services Manager at DDL, he continued, “Having been recommended this system we knew Vivid would be a reliable partner and, now that the system is up and running, overall we believe the Matrix system will prove to be a sound investment allowing us to better serve our customers”
Lewis Evans, Product Manager at Vivid said “We thank Greg and the team at DDL for selecting Vivid as their lamination partner – we are sure that the Matrix will serve them well for many years to come. We believe, with the ever-expanding range of films, foils and spot UV effects Vivid now offer, that the Matrix opens up creative possibilities that really help companies like DDL to grow their businesses”
Matrix Pneumatic and Matrix Duplex systems offer fast and reliable laminating but are also able to create stunning foiling and Spot UV effects without the need for a die; making them ideal for short-medium run digital print. The Omni-Flow deep pile feeder with its 180mm stack depth allows easy swap-over of paper stocks and autonomous machine operation freeing up a print operative to work on other jobs simultaneously. The Omni-Flow can be retro-fitted to any Matrix Pneumatic or Duplex system as a cost-effective upgrade from manual to auto feed. Vivid recently released a new video about the Matrix system which can be viewed at https://youtu.be/6gc0lYp81cI
